Annual Environment Review
Welcome to our 2010 environment review.
Climate change represents a huge global challenge to our planet and we have seen how extreme weather can devastate communities. We believe that everyone has a responsibility to be imaginative in helping to tackle these challenges - for companies, ‘business as usual’ is not enough.
Our response at Pearson is centred on our commitment to climate neutrality. We wanted a clear and ambitious commitment to provide a catalyst for generating ideas and enthusiasm among the people who make up Pearson on how to reduce our environmental impact.
We continue to be pleased with our progress. Against a backdrop of a growing international footprint for Pearson, we can report a significant reduction in our company carbon emissions. In this review, we describe the highlights from our many environmental activities and initiatives this year which contributed to this achievement.
Although much has been done, there is more to do. Our climate neutral commitment will continue into 2011 and we will again extend it to cover businesses we purchased during 2010. We also made good progress on working with our suppliers to get a full understanding of our complete carbon footprint from forest to reader and this work will continue in 2011.
We know that our customers, authors, readers, suppliers and employees all want to work with or buy from a business that can help inform them on how to reduce their own carbon footprint as well as one that delivers a significant and measurable contribution to tackling climate change. We publish this environment review to provide more detail on our environmental programmes and performance as a complement to the Our Impact on Society corporate responsibility report.
We believe that businesses should strive to demonstrate how they can have a positive impact on society and the planet. It’s the right thing to do: for the environment; for society; and for our business. We'll be working hard to continue to do more and go further this year.
