Who we are
The Diversity & Inclusion (“D&I”) team is a central, global resource within Human Resource’s Talent Center of Expertise. Though the team is staffed by a VP & Global Head of Diversity & Inclusion and a Senior Advisor of Diversity & Inclusion, we believe that every Pearson colleague is a Diversity & Inclusion practitioner.
Whatever your role at Pearson, you are integral to ensuring that all of our colleagues are valued and included in our organizational work.
To ensure that we have scalable, sustainable impact, our team functions as a global network. In addition to our dedicated D&I staff, we manage a team of Global Diversity & Inclusion Advocates.
The Advocates are full-time Pearson employees who apply for and are selected to help implement global D&I principles in their local businesses and offices. We also facilitate the work of employee resource groups (ERGs) globally.
What we do
Our Diversity & Inclusion efforts are focused on three primary areas: our people, our culture, and our learners.
We seek to:

- Build a culture of innovation and learning where every idea and perspective is valued and where we embed the principles of diversity & inclusion into all business processes & practices.
- Build closer relationships with our customers and learners by ensuring that our people and products reflect who we are and whom we serve.
- Contribute to the development of inclusive products, solutions, and services for our customers.
Business & Product Development
The global D&I team is proud to be partnering closely with Pearson’s North America Talent & Leadership Team in 2016 to assist in the development and go-to-market strategy for various diversity-related products and services, including Be Gender Intelligent.
Be Gender Intelligent is a transformational learning experience offered by Pearson to organizations and corporations to assist them in leveraging the unique skills of men and women to solve business challenges.
Employee Resource Groups
Pearson’s employee resource groups (ERGs) consist of self-selected colleagues across our business units and geographies who contribute to Pearson’s efforts to embed diversity and inclusion into all aspects of our business.
The purpose of a Pearson ERG is two-fold: to provide the employees who join them with opportunities for networking, increased engagement, professional development, and mentorship, and also to contribute to Pearson’s business objectives.
All ERGs have clear missions, charters, and by-laws and are approved and facilitated by the Global D&I team.

Diversity Learning Opportunities
The Diversity & Inclusion team develops training and learning opportunities on a range of issues as requested by the business such as Diversity Awareness & Harassment Prevention, Fast Thinking: How Unconscious Bias Can Slow Our Business, and Navigating Generational Differences at Work.
Awards & Recognition
Pearson is the proud recipient of several awards that recognize our commitment to inclusion.
Corporate Equality Index (US)
For 3 consecutive years in the US, Pearson received a perfect score on the Corporate Equality Index (CEI) for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) workplace equality, making our company a designated Best Place To Work for LGBT colleagues and allies.
The CEI is administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and is the preeminent benchmark of organizational best practice on issues that impact the LGBT community. Pearson first participated on the CEI in 2006, earning only a 30% on the index that year. Over the intervening years, Pearson has worked diligently to become a best practice employer for LGBT colleagues, increasing its score to 75% in 2009, 90% in 2012, and 100% for the last three years. Pearson’s rating for 2017 will be released in November 2016.
Dave Thomas Foundation’s Top 100 Adoption-Friendly Workplaces
In the US, Pearson was awarded a spot on the Dave Thomas Foundation’s list of the Top 100 Adoption-Friendly Workplaces in 2014 & 2015. The Foun￼￼dation’s list measures benefits offered to adoptive families as well as workplace culture, and allowing for time for adoptive parent/employees to adjust S to their new families.
Pearson was honored on the 2016 list as #48 in the United States, and #1 in the education industry. We are proud that our application this year featured the stories of two of our adoptive families, one from WILL and one from Pearson Spectrum. Both employees who generously shared their stories are also members of the Pearson Parents community.
WorldatWork Alliance for Work-Life Progress Seal of Distinction
In 2015, Pearson was awarded the WorldatWork Work-Life Seal of Distinction, which recognizes employers who demonstrate leadership in creating a culture that supports employees at work and at home.
Recipient organizations are designated as “forward-thinking organizations that look beyond cultural, demographic and institutional boundaries to continually create new ways to enrich the lives of employees while achieving business goals.”
Iowa Corridor Business Journal (CBJ) Best Diversity Workplace Strategy
In 2015, the Iowa Corridor Business Journal (CBJ) selected Pearson as the recipient of its 2015 Workforce Award in the category of Best Diversity Work- place Strategy.
The CBJ partnered with Kirkwood Community College to present the region’s first Workforce Awards to companies that are ahead of the curve in creating and maintaining their workforce talent edge. The award reflects our strong diversity outreach programs and overall commitment to encouraging diversity within the workforce.
