In oxidation, electrons are lost; in reduction, electrons are gained. One useful mnemonic to help you remember this is OIL RIG (Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain). Redox reactions are prevalent in cellular respiration, and they tend to be catalyzed by enzymes.
