Processing Decisions: 동영상 및 연습문제
Processing Decisions focus on whether a company should sell a product as-is or complete additional processing before sale. The key is to compare the relevant revenues and relevant costs for each alternative, since each choice can have a different selling price and different added costs. Processing further is only worthwhile when the added revenue from the processed product exceeds the extra processing cost.
The central measure is net benefit to operating income, found by comparing the revenue from each option after considering any additional processing costs. In practice, managers evaluate the product at one stage, then compare it with the product after further processing, using only the costs and revenues that change between alternatives. The better choice is the option with the higher net benefit to operating income, which supports clear decision-making about when to sell and when to process further.

Processing Decisions
Oops All Almonds harvested 2,000,000 lbs. of almonds this season. The company can sell the almonds raw for \$2.00 per pound, generating \$4,000,000 in revenue, or process them into almond butter, yielding 800,000 jars that sell for \$8.00 each, generating \$6,400,000 in revenue. Processing the almonds further would cost an additional \$1,900,000. What is the net benefit to operating income of processing the almonds further instead of selling them as-is?
\$8,500,000
\$2,400,000
\$500,000
\$1,900,000

Processing decisions in managerial accounting involve determining whether a company should sell a product as it is or process it further before sale. This decision requires comparing the relevant revenues and costs associated with each option. For example, a company might decide whether to sell raw pineapples or process them into canned pineapples. The key is to analyze if the additional revenue from processing exceeds the extra costs incurred. Managers focus on the net benefit to operating income, which is the difference between the revenue generated and the additional processing costs. The option with the higher net benefit is typically the better choice, helping managers make informed decisions about product sales and processing.
To calculate the net benefit to operating income in processing decisions, you subtract the additional processing costs from the revenue generated by the processed product. The formula is: . For example, if selling raw pineapples yields \$80,000 and processing them into canned pineapples generates \$175,000 in revenue but costs \$100,000 to process, the net benefit for processing is . Comparing this to the \$80,000 from selling raw pineapples, the higher net benefit (\$80,000) indicates selling raw pineapples is the better choice.
A company should choose to process a product further only when the additional revenue from the processed product exceeds the extra processing costs. This means the net benefit to operating income from processing must be higher than selling the product as-is. Managers compare the relevant revenues and costs for each alternative. If processing increases the selling price enough to cover the added labor, materials, and overhead costs, then processing is worthwhile. Otherwise, it is better to sell the product without further processing. This decision ensures the company maximizes its operating income and avoids unnecessary expenses.
Relevant costs and revenues in processing decisions are those that differ between the alternatives being considered. Relevant revenues are the additional income generated by selling the processed product instead of the raw product. Relevant costs include any extra expenses incurred during processing, such as labor, materials, and manufacturing overhead. Costs and revenues that remain the same regardless of the decision are not relevant. By focusing only on these relevant amounts, managers can accurately assess the financial impact of processing further and make informed decisions that improve operating income.
Processing decisions directly impact operating income by affecting both revenues and costs. When a company processes a product further, it may increase the selling price, thus increasing revenue. However, this also usually involves additional costs such as labor, materials, and overhead. The net effect on operating income depends on whether the extra revenue exceeds the extra costs. If the net benefit to operating income is positive and higher than selling the product as-is, processing improves operating income. Otherwise, it reduces operating income. Therefore, careful analysis of these factors is essential for maximizing profitability.
