Hey, everyone, let's do this problem. It says, determine whether each of the following pairs of structures represents two different compounds or resonance contributors of the same compound. So if the compounds are resonance contributors, that means that you can move around the electrons on one of the structures to get the other one as a residence form or vice versa. So they are compounds with d localized electrons. If they are different compounds, you cannot rearrange the electrons to get the other structure. So let's simply draw the resonance structures for one of the compounds will pick the first one in each pair and see if we get the other one as a resonance form. So we have our five member ring with one double bond and a neighboring positive charge zero carbons away or I guess only one carbon away, no carbons in between our double bond and our positive charge. So we can move those pi electrons toward that positive charge and notice how we get the second structure that's given to us. So these are actually resonance contributors, resonance contributors. So remember that the positive charge and the pi electrons have to be a certain distance away from each other to participate in resonance. Right. So here there are no carbons in between that end carbon of the double bond and our positive charge our carbon with a positive charge. So looking at our second structure, our second pair, I'll draw the first structure, we have our carbonell group and one carbon away, we have a double bond. So since those double bonds are only one carbon away from each other, this double bond can move towards that carbonell group, sending the pi electrons onto that oxygen, which gives us a negative charge on the oxygen atom and one double bond at the base of that former carbonell group. But this is not the structure given to us in our problem. Is there another way we could get this second structure? No right. In order for this to happen, our pi electrons would have to move to the left right. They would have to move this way, but there are no positive charges that would give us motivation, give those electrons motivation to move in that direction. So this is not a correct resident structure of this compound. The first compound, these are going to be different compounds. So for part B, they are different compounds.
