In today's video, we are going to learn how to solve the following problem which asks us how many hydrogen atoms are bonded to each indicated carbon in the structure of the morphine derivative shown below. Now, to do this problem where it is that we have to recall the basics of bond line structures. Recall that whenever you have a bond line structure or sometimes we refer to it as a skeletal structure, we are always having those simplicity hydrogen atoms recall rule number one, that every carbon must have four bonds. Okay. So if we only see several bonds, we can easily get the number of hydrants that are implicit by simply finding the difference between four and the number of bonds B that we actually see. So that would correspond to the number of hydrogen atoms. Okay. So let's do that. Let's take an example. For example, if we start at the very top carbon that we are given, we notice that this carbon and riot only has one bond. So to get the number of hydrogen atoms, we are simply going to subtract 4 -1 bond that we are seeing, right? So there must be three implicit hydrogen atoms and that's it. We're going to add three. That's one hydrogen at the adjacent position, we have 123 bonds, four minus three, that's one hydrogen Moving on. We see we approach our bridge, right? And we are seeing that we have two bonds for mine, be very careful, right? Because we have a verdict here. So there's clearly a carbon atom at this position. So we take 4 -2 that gives us two hydrogen atoms. And finally, the position that we skipped, we have to be very careful. We noticed that in plane we see bonds and there's one more, the fourth one which is pointing upwards, right? So we have a total of 1234 bonds, four minus four that gives us zero. And that would be it. We may just review our steps. Let's label this is our final answer where we have properly assigned the number of hydrogen atoms. But the whole idea is just to remember that every carbon that you have must correspond to four bonds. If you want to identify the number of implicit hydrogen atoms, you're simply going to subtract the number of bonds from four to get the number of hydrogen atoms as an example.
