Pearson to launch multilingual higher education learning products

Pearson, the world’s leading learning company, has today announced plans to launch multilingual online learning products that will provide higher education materials and boost opportunities for collaboration with educational institutions around the world.

Pearson has chosen to build these products using the open-source Sakai collaboration learning environment. Sakai is developed by a community of educators who create open-source software with the aim of improving teaching, learning and research. The community consists of academic institutions, not-for-profits, commercial organisations and individuals. Pearson considers its relationship with Sakai a long term partnership and intends to contribute localisations and some of its code back to the community.

This initiative will give educators and students across the globe easy access to high-quality higher education tutorial and assessment products in a broad range of disciplines. Designed for blended or distance learning, the products will be available through a new online platform specifically for non-English language speakers.

Initially products will be available in Dutch, French, and Japanese and are planned in more than twelve languages to enable non-English speakers to take full advantage of Pearson’s learning resources and collaboration tools.

“As the world’s leading learning company, our aim is to help people make progress in their lives through learning” commented Subroto Mozumdar, President Higher and Professional Education at Pearson. “Our aim will be to develop a line of products that is both global and local, enabling educators around the world to access higher education resources in their own language so that they can inspire their students to reach their full potential. Sakai provides a robust environment in which to develop this programme, and we are happy to be working with them on this new initiative”

“We’re delighted that Pearson has chosen Sakai as a delivery platform” said Ian Dolphin, Executive Director of the Sakai Foundation, “each new project brings knowledge and new code that benefits the entire Sakai community.”

The first group of products is currently in development with pilots and testing planned for early 2012. The first suite of products is due for launch in autumn 2012.
