Teacher Career Pathways

Maintaining the most motivated, highly qualified teachers is an ongoing challenge for America’s schools.  

A three-year study conducted the National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY) and Pearson, in partnership with the National Education Association and Public Impact and with assistance from the American Federation of Teachers, seeks to find research-based answers by looking at teacher career pathways.

Teacher career pathways is an emerging staffing and career model that gives teachers leadership opportunities without leaving the classroom. Teaching has traditionally been a flat profession. That is, there are few growth opportunities without moving from teaching to administration. This two-part report series offers a new vision of teacher career pathways for the 21st century that holds promise for recruiting and retaining excellent teachers who further student learning.
