How does an Online Program Management (OPM) partnership with Pearson work?

In an Online Program Management (OPM) partnership with Pearson, we deliver customised, comprehensive and innovative services to help you launch, support and grow your online programs, and improve outcomes for everyone. Multiple flexible arrangements are possible, including business models that can help an institution fund programs which might not otherwise be possible.

Why should my institution partner with Pearson Online Learning Services?

Partnering to develop online courses may help you accelerate innovation, improve performance, reduce risk and build more learner-centric programs. The online marketplace has become extremely competitive and learners' expectations have grown. Success now requires many specialised skill sets, and relatively few institutions possess them all. Some institutions have all the capabilities they need now, but expect to require far greater capacity — and qualitatively new skills — as they scale to meet growth objectives.  

Our partners are committed to maintaining high academic standards and are entrepreneurial in terms of educational delivery. They recognise that success in the online learning arena means being flexible, market-driven and performance-based. 

Before we start, we conduct a thorough assessment and share our best strategic recommendations for high-potential programs and institutional readiness. We will make our mutual decision to partner based on evidence-based research and experience.

What is Pearson's role in online program development strategy?

As part of the world's learning company, Pearson Online Learning Services uses robust market analytics and program-selection frameworks to help institutions identify substantial opportunities within their education portfolios, and consistent with their strategy, brand strengths and partnership objectives. 

Our advice reflects our deep expertise in lead acquisition, marketing, and online curricula; our work with over 450 programs from 50+ diverse institutions, and our ongoing research into higher education and career trends — much of it proprietary. Our aim is to help institutions place learners at the centre of all they do, whether they are delivering traditional online degree programs, alternative credentials or both. 

Can faculty members design their own courses, select their own textbooks and maintain academic freedom?

Yes. As a Pearson partner, the institution and its appointed representatives are responsible for the academic integrity and decisions for the program. Their regional and professional accrediting bodies determine the academic standards of all programs, including online programs. As a Pearson partner, we align with your processes and frameworks, including admissions decisions, how your brand and program(s) are represented, teaching and learning, tuition rates and degree conferrals. We wrap our services around these elements to create innovative, high-quality online programs with (and for) you. 

In developing degree programs and short courses, our learning developers, designers and production team will share best practices, optimal learning and teaching approaches, and new enabling technologies to create meaningful learning experiences. It's a collaborative process with oversight by our dedicated project team with faculty and subject matter experts guiding the outcomes about their courses and learning experiences.  

Who builds and maintains the online program or course?

If you don't have a dedicated learning design and development team and tech support for faculty, we can provide it. If you do, we can complement or extend your resources if you desire. It’s up to you. 

Our design and development team work closely with your faculty to design, develop and deploy innovative online higher education programs. We create transformative online learning experiences by designing learning environments that are personalised, engaging, collaborative and challenging. We believe that learners are active participants in their learning, and quality learning in the online environment involves an ecosystem outside of the traditional classroom. 

We also provide professional development for your faculty and subject matter experts during the design, development and delivery process to provide capability uplift and knowledge sharing through our partnership.  

How are online learners oriented and supported?

We help each learner choose the best possible program for their needs and goals, address concerns, and help learners apply, enrol and onboard. 

With online degree programs, our personalised success advisors support students all the way to graduation. Their advisor stays in regular contact, orients new learners, answers questions, offers encouragement, assists with administrative details and helps learners succeed online. For alternative credentials programs, we work with our partners to identify the optimal mix of in-person and digital touchpoints to keep learners engaged and moving forward. 

How do university staff interact with Pearson?

We work closely with individuals across your institution to seamlessly integrate our processes with yours. Our staff see themselves as an extension of your staff, and they represent themselves that way to students. They immerse themselves in your institution's processes, policies, and culture. In fact, at launch, we bring the entire program team to your campus to begin that immersion process and build long-lasting relationships.

Pearson Online Learning Services partners with 45 institutions globally, supporting more than 250 programs.

Do you offer stand-alone services or only full OPM partnerships?

Both. Pearson currently partner with some of the best institutions in the world through a comprehensive full-service, multi-year arrangement. We also assist other organisations and institutions in one or two areas, such as learning design, educator rapid upskilling or content production, to name a few.
