Languages learning: Developing viewing skills and building intercultural competence

In this session originally presented at the 2021 AFMLTA conference, Gabriella, Annabel and Nathan give insights into ways to nurture and develop viewing skills and intercultural competence with students of Languages. They cover some key principles and share some ideas of activities, routines and prompts to use in the Languages classroom. Video kindly shared by Gabriella, Annabel and Nathan.

Meet the presenters:

Gabriella Bertolissi:

Gabriella Bertolissi currently works at the Victorian School of Languages. Gabriella manages Languages Curriculum Projects for the Department of Education and Training of Victoria. Prior to that, she was managing the International Assessment of Languages Competence tests at the Australian Council for Educational Research and worked as a Project Manager: Languages at the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. Gabriella was the President of the Modern Language Teachers’ Association of Victoria for many years. She was also a consultant on the Ecco! Uno and Ecco! Due 2nd Edition series from Pearson and led the author team on Ecco! Senior.

Annabel Gassmann:

Annabel Gassmann has been involved in education in France and in NSW for over 25 years. This includes a long career in NSW secondary schools as a teacher of French and Latin and as head of department. Annabel is the Co-President of the NSW Association of French Teachers and has been involved extensively in teacher PD and with NESA as an HSC marker, examiner, assessor, curriculum writer and HSC Chief Examiner. Annabel is one of the lead authors of Pearson’s Quoi de Neuf ? Senior resources and is a contributing author and consultant on Quoi de Neuf ? 1-4 2nd Edition. She is now also a tutor at the University of Sydney among other writing activities.

Nathan Lane:

Nathan Lane has been teaching Japanese in Victorian secondary schools for over 20 years and has presented at state, national and international language conferences. He is currently the Deputy Principal Teaching and Learning at St Mary MacKillop College Swan Hill and the President of the Japanese Language Teachers’ Association of Victoria. Nathan took part in the writing for the first edition of Pearson’s iiTomo 1-4 as a contributing author and more recently he was one of the lead authors on iiTomo Senior.
