Jobs at this level in the construction industry require more qualifications, knowledge and skills than you need at entry level.
You’ll also discover more variety in the tasks you’ll be asked to do. There are a wide range of jobs too, whether you prefer practical work, working with numbers or dealing with customers. You could gain a skilled trade as a bricklayer or plumber or follow a more technical route as a trainee quantity surveyor or building technician.

Trainee quantity surveyor
Working alongside a quantity surveyor or construction professional to manage the costs of a building project.
Heating and ventilation engineer
Installing and maintaining heating and ventilation in buildings.
Building technician
Working alongside a construction manager on the costs, quality, planning and supervision of a project.
Housing officer
Supervising rented properties for local authorities or housing associations and dealing with tenants.

Typical working conditions
- Your working conditions will vary depending on your role and the project you are working on at the time.
- You might need to travel, particularly if you work for a large organisation or develop specialist knowledge.
Qualifications needed
If you are focused on a career in construction, you might be interested in Level 3 vocational qualifications or an advanced apprenticeship in construction. To work as a skilled tradesperson in bricklaying or carpentry and joinery, you will need a Level 3 NVQ Diploma.
A levels in subjects like maths, design and technology, physics or business will also be relevant.
Career path
You can move on from jobs at this level by studying part-time for a HNC, a HND, or a foundation degree or bachelor’s degree. Some jobs are only open to applicants with these higher-level qualifications.
With experience, you might move into jobs with more responsibility, for example you might become a senior housing officer. You could become self-employed in your trade as a bricklayer or kitchen fitter.
