Penguin sets up sales and marketing company in Asia

London, 20 July 2001, Penguin has today announced that it is opening a sales and marketing company in Asia. Penguin Singapore and Malaysia will start trading from 1 January 2002 and will use Pearson Education Asia for its distribution in Singapore and Malaysia.

Penguin has recruited Eddy Teo to run the new company. Eddy Teo was
previously General Manager at MPH Distributors (S) Pte.Ltd. in Singapore and he will report to Mike Bryan, International Sales and Marketing Director for The Penguin Group.

"We are delighted that Eddy has agreed to join us at this very exciting time," commented Mike Bryan. "He brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise. It is also great to be working with Wong Wee Woon CEO of Pearson Education Asia and our Pearson Ed colleagues, whose new, state-of-the-art warehouse will ensure we offer our customers the very best delivery service. Pearson Education Asia already has a fantastic reputation for distribution in the region but the new set-up will bring even greater benefits. "

Penguin has begun to develop a local interest list in Asia and this July sees the launch of a series called Essential Asia, a list of A-format titles with Asian subject matters. The first six titles include Paul Theroux's novel set in Singapore, Saint Jack; Adeline Yen Mah's evocative autobiography, Falling Leaves and Iris Chang's controversial history The Rape Of Nanking. This autumn will see the publication of The Fall Of Singapore by Frank Owen published in time for the 60th anniversary in February 2002.

Kathy John, Penguin International's publishing manager, says " The concept behind Essential Asia is to publish important fiction and non-fiction titles with a particular regional interest that will appeal to both general readers and tourists alike."

Mike Bryan is also working closely with David Davidar, Publisher and CEO of Penguin India to investigate further publishing opportunities in S.E. Asia.
