New materials respond to growing demand for Chinese language study in North America
Frankfurt, Germany (PRWEB) October 14, 2009 -- Pearson, the world's leading education and technology company, and the Chinese Language Council International (Hanban), an organization that promotes the Chinese language throughout the world, today announced a Memorandum of Understanding to support Chinese language teaching in the US and North America with a plan to develop innovative course materials and a series of professional development workshops for teachers. The signing ceremony took place at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
"In recent years we have seen an explosion of interest in the study of Chinese in secondary schools, colleges and universities across North America," said Phil Miller, Senior Vice President of Pearson Education and Publisher for World Languages. "This interest will no doubt continue to grow in the global economy, challenging our educational systems to provide teachers who are both fluent in Chinese and trained in current language teaching methods, and at the same time creating a demand for high-quality teaching materials tailored to the needs of North American educational institutions."
"This collaboration will improve the teaching and learning of Chinese in North America," commented Dr. Xu Lin, Director-General of Hanban and Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters. "Pearson is a leading global publisher. The Hanban has broad coverage and experience in Chinese teaching and learning. We get together to make things better."
The Chinese language materials will be designed for use in secondary schools and colleges across North America and other places in need of similar resources. The materials will reflect current pedagogical practices and philosophies in the field of second-language acquisition, recent advances in educational technology and the special needs of US-based instructors and students. Pearson has brought together a team of experienced authors who will work with Pearson editors and the Hanban's experts to create professional development workshops focused on new language teaching methods. The Hanban will also provide assistance to Pearson as it develops innovative media materials and customized versions of the program to meet the unique needs of particular educational institutions.
"We are honored that the Hanban will collaborate with Pearson by offering their resources and expertise as we develop a set of learning materials for Chinese courses that will go far beyond anything currently available," said Miller.
