World-leading education and information company recognised for global expansion
Pearson, the global education and information company, today received The Queen’s Award for Enterprise, in the International Trade category, for its success in growing global sales. The awards are made by HM The Queen, on the advice of the Prime Minister, who is assisted by an Advisory Committee. The award was announced on today’s birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.
The award recognises Pearson’s international growth, with overseas sales (outside the U.K.) increasing by £726 million between 2006 and 2008 and total overseas sales of almost £11 billion over those three years.
Pearson is headquartered in London and operates in more than 60 countries around the world, employing 37,000 people including about 6,000 in the U.K. In 2009, the company had global sales of £5.6 billion and operating profit of £858 million.
“We are honoured to receive this award, which recognises the imagination and dedication of 37,000 talented Pearson people,” said Marjorie Scardino, Pearson’s chief executive. “For 166 years, Pearson has been building an international business from its deep roots in the U.K. Today that business is concerned with education of all sorts, and we know we are privileged to play some small part in helping people make progress in their lives in that way.”
