Financial Times Advances U.S. Expansion with San Francisco Print Site

The Financial Times today announced it will begin printing at San Francisco Offsite Printing in Redwood City, California. The new print capabilities and upgraded distribution system will permit more timely home delivery and widespread availability of the FT throughout this international trade and technology hub which includes the San Francisco Bay Area, Silicon Valley, San Jose, and Oakland.

The new print capabilities build on the Financial Times' aggressive U.S. expansion, initiated in 1997, and aim at bringing daily coverage of global business to a broader range of readers in North America. Since early 1997, circulation for the Financial Times in the U.S. has tripled and recently surpassed the 100,000 mark.

"With the dawn of the technology age and the growing economic importance of the Asia-Pacific region -- global developments are felt throughout the Bay Area more than ever before," said Stuart Arnold, the FT's Managing Director for the Americas. "We are delighted to provide Northern Californians the FT's international political, business and financial reporting and expert analysis in a more timely manner."

"With our team of expert correspondents situated around the globe, the FT offers the worldwide coverage readers need to stay ahead of the curve and the international perspective they simply can't get anywhere else," said Robert Thomson, the FT's U.S. Managing Editor. "The U.S. does not exist in isolation. International events have a direct influence on the US economy and policy. "

To promote awareness of the FT in Northern California, the Financial Times is launching a regional advertising campaign that includes lighted dioramas, print advertisements, free standing inserts, mobile billboards, and extensive sampling. As part of the promotion, the FT will distribute more than 4,000 umbrellas with complimentary newspapers during the week of January 17th, providing not only international business coverage, but coverage from inclement weather.

The Financial Times began printing in the U.S. in 1985. In addition to the San Francisco area, the FT is also printed in the U.S. in the New York, Chicago and Los Angeles metropolitan areas, as well as in Hudson, New Hampshire, serving the New England region. To continue its U.S. expansion, the FT expects to launch two additional print sites in the Miami and Dallas areas later this year.
