New 'Pearson Teacher Fellowship' inspires college graduates to teach in Head Start Centers in underserved communities throughout the U.S.
BOSTON, MA, November 5, 2001 ' Pearson, America's leading education company, today announced the launch of the 'Pearson Teacher Fellowship' as part of a major corporate philanthropic partnership with Boston-based Jumpstart, a national non-profit that connects college students with low-income preschoolers across the country.
Pearson's $2.5 million, three year commitment will help 50 Jumpstart-trained teachers become full-time Head Start teachers each year, and each teacher will have a Pearson mentor. The first two Pearson Teacher Fellows have already been recruited and have started work in Boston area Pre-K classrooms. During the course of the program, Teacher Fellows will impact over 5,000 children in Head Start classrooms across the country.
'There is still no job in the world that can match the importance and influence of a great teacher', said Marjorie Scardino, Pearson CEO. 'Through our partnership with Jumpstart, we hope to make a difference in a community we care about by bringing more talented, motivated people into teaching.'
Pearson's commitment extends far beyond simply writing a check. Pearson employees will serve as mentors for the Fellows and volunteer in Head Start classrooms nationwide. In addition, Pearson and Jumpstart are working on a number of projects where Pearson expertise can enhance the Jumpstart program. Jumpstart has already begun to implement a variety of learning tools from different Pearson companies. These include the EarlyLearner on-line assessment tools for young children developed by Pearson's Learning Network, and the 'Get Ready to Read!' screening tool designed to identify young children's readiness to read launched by Pearson's Early Learning division and the National Center for Learning Disabilities. All these products and services will be donated to Jumpstart as part of the partnership with Pearson.
'Pearson's commitment to Jumpstart at all levels will allow us to take a major step toward accomplishing Jumpstart's mission: one day, every child will enter school prepared to succeed,' said Aaron Lieberman, President and CEO. 'Pearson's ground breaking sponsorship is a model of how for-profits and non-profits can partner to build an effort far stronger than what either organization could attempt on their own.'
'We're thrilled to be working with both Pearson and Jumpstart,' said Joyce Tanner, Site Director at the Boston Head Start facility where two Pearson Teacher Fellows are already working. 'They have collectively taken on one of the biggest challenges our industry faces: recruiting, training, and retraining quality Pre-K teachers in urban environments. We applaud their vision and compassion.'
