Engaging for young students

The key to success is a general English syllabus combined with academic English and exam preparation. This way, students prepare for tests whilst developing a good general English base for future academic studies. Assessment spreads develop the necessary skills needed at the popular university admission exams. Teacher’s notes also contain suggestions on how to tailor material for exams-focused classes.

Promote learning progress

As new vocabulary and language structures are introduced it's important that students are exposed to them several times. Once students are exposed to new language via their textbook, it's useful for them to become familiar with new learnings and practice it in the Workbook/Activity Book, then see it again in a video format or on the iWB.

Slowly introduce grammar

Introducing language structure in a way that students can make sense of it is important, and one thing that helps is to introduce language in manageable amounts. It's useful for students to see the target structure in a way that can be used as a model for practice and continued reference. Take a look at the “Look” grammar boxes in the Student Book/Pupil Book.

Incorporate digital elements

It is amazing what the kids are willing to do on a computer that they are reluctant to do in a book or on paper. The Student Book/Pupil's Book comes with a CD-ROM full of activities kids can use to practice what they learned.

Keep lessons fun but focused

Students are excited when we incorporate technology into the classroom. Children enjoy things that are visual and interactive like DVD, CD-ROM, and ActiveTeach - a digital version of the Student Book/Pupil's Book.

Track students' progress

Schools and parents want to make sure that students are learning - which means continual evaluation of performance. Our Discovery Island has assessment games and tests in every unit to track students' progress.

Components

Student Book w/ CD-ROM

Each level of the Student Book contains a Welcome unit and 8 units each designed for 3-5 hours of class per week.
Each unit includes a values lesson, a cross-curricular lesson and an “phonics” lesson.
The CD-ROM contains additional interactive games and puzzles related to each unit of the Student Book. It also includes the songs and chants.

Teacher’s Edition w/ Audio CD

The Teacher’s Edition has a step-by-step lesson plans covering all the course material.

Each lesson is clearly structured into stages:

Starting the lesson
Presentation
Practice
Ending the lesson

Further optional activities are suggested for extension to cover more teaching hours.

Lesson notes are designed to be flexible to support busy teachers or those who have limited access to resources. The introduction includes recommended procedures for using games, classroom language and stories effectively and how all the course components can be best used in class.
The Audio CD includes tracks for the photocopiable tests found in the Teacher’s Edition.

Picture Cards

Set of Picture Cards for each level contains the main target language in each unit which are used to present, practice, and consolidate language.

Workbook w/ Audio CD

The Workbook helps reinforce and consolidate the language presented in the Student Book. It contains controlled and freer practice plus personalization.The Audio CD has tracks for the listening activities in the Workbook.

Audio CDs

The Class Audio CDs contain all the chants, songs, stories, and listening comprehension activities. There are also karaoke versions of the songs.

DVD

Every level of the course has a DVD with four episodes. Each episode can be used to reinforce and extend the language focusing on the topics and language from every two Student Book units.

ActiveTeach

Our Discovery Island ActiveTeach provides software for use on any Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) with integrated tools. It can also be used with just a computer and projector.

It contains links to all of the Student Book and Workbook pages, digitally transformed to create more opportunities for interaction between students, the teacher, and the classroom resources, as well as links to the audio and video.

Posters

There is a multi-poster pack for the course. Teachers will find information on where best to use them in the main lesson notes in the Teacher’s Edition.

This is a far away planet that has life on and under the surface. In some ways it is very hi-tech and in others, very primitive. It is inhabited by aliens of various sorts.

Level 4: Movie Studio Island

The island is a huge Movie Studio, with sets for several films of different genres. As well as the sets, there is also the paraphernalia of filming with star trailers, catering, props, special effects, etc.

Level 5: Ice Island

This is a lush winter wonderland, where the glaciers and snowscapes are interspersed with luxury ice hotels, ski caves and humble mountain dwellings. People get around by conventional transport and by skis, snowboards, skates, para-gliding, and a helicopter.

It’s the year 2100. The island, which was a normal mix of town and country in 2011, has developed to the extent that all green spaces have filled in and been replaced by a modern, urban civilization.
