How to better assess language skills using artificial intelligenceTraditional assessments use a range of methods to assess language skills. Most tests are based on specific skills task which presents a passage in a written or aural format and ask questions on that passage. Similarly, with speaking and writing, prompts are given to elicit language which is then scored by an examiner.

These methods are becoming more and more obsolete as technology changes the way language is tested. One change is the introduction of integrated skills assessment. Integrating skills is commonplace in teaching methodology but strangely absent from testing. Technology, however, enables us to use more effectively the texts and questions we present to test takers. At the same time the automated scoring of speaking and writing responses has become common place using artificial intelligence and scoring algorithms.
