How to improve literacy in the classroom

What is literacy?

Teachers at all stages of education often complain about their students’ reading skills. The students are literate. In other words, they can interpret the graphemes, or letters on the page, into words. But they struggle to identify the purpose of a text or to analyze it in a meaningful way. We could say that the students have poor literacy skills.

Literacy is a term used to describe an active, critical form of reading. Some of the skills of a critical reader include:

Checking new information

A crucial literacy skill involves discerning whether a text is factually true or not. A critical reader always checks new information against existing knowledge. As we read, we have an internal dialogue: Where does that information come from? That’s impossible because ….   

Separating fact from opinion

This skill is essential for understanding many different types of texts from newspaper articles to scientific research. 

Understanding the purpose of a text

All pieces of text have a main purpose. This may be entertainment, in the case of a story or persuasion, in the case of advertising. A critical reader will know how to identify the purpose of the text. 

In the classroom, different types of text require different responses from the students. It’s important, as students grow older, that they know how to read and respond appropriately to a piece of written information.

Identifying key information in a text

This is an essential skill for summarizing information or following instructions. It is also important when we transform written information into something else, like a chart.

In many ways, literacy is the key skill that underpins learning at all stages. This may seem like an exaggeration, but consider the importance of the four skills outlined above.

Strategies to promote literacy

Many teachers and parents of early learners instinctively develop literacy skills before the children can even read. 

When we read a story out loud to a child, we often ask questions about the narrative as we turn the pages: What is going to happen next? How do you think …. feels? Why is …?  

These questions set the foundations for literacy. 

Working with a reading text

Too often, the comprehension questions that teachers ask about a text are mechanical. They ask the student to “lift” the information out of the text.

A tale of two dragons

"Once upon a time, there was an island in the sea. One day, people were working in the fields. The sun was shining and there was one cloud in the sky. The cloud was a strange shape and moving towards the island. Soon the cloud was very big. Then a small boy looked up."

Typical comprehension questions based on the text would be:

  • Where were the people working? 
  • How many clouds were in the sky?

These questions do not really reflect on the meaning of the text and do not lead to a critical analysis. While these simple questions are a good checking mechanism, they don’t help develop literacy skills.

If we want to develop critical readers, we need to incorporate a critical analysis of reading texts into class work through a deep reading comprehension. We can organize the comprehension into three types.

1. Text level

Comprehension at “text level” is about exploring the meaning of individual words and phrases in a text. Examples for the text above could be:

  • Find words that show the story is a fairy tale.
  • Underline a sentence about the weather.

Other text-level activities include:

  • Finding words in the text from a definition
  • Identifying opinions in the text
  • Finding verbs of speech
  • Finding and classifying words or phrases

2. Between the lines

Comprehension “between the lines” means speculating and making guesses with the information we already have from the text. This type of literacy activity often involves lots of questions and discussions with the students. You should encourage students to give good reasons for their opinions. An example for the text above could be:

  • What do you think the cloud really is?

Other “Between the lines” activities include:

  • Discussing how characters in a story feel and why
  • Discussing characters’ motivation
  • Identifying the most important moments in a story
  • Speculating about what is going to happen next
  • Identifying possible events from fantasy events

Literacy activities are not only based on fiction. We need to help students be critical readers of all sorts of texts. The text below is factual and informative:

What skills do you need for ice hockey?

"Ice hockey players should be very good skaters. They always have good balance. They change direction very quickly and they shouldn't fall over. Players should also have fast reactions because the puck moves very quickly."

“Between the lines” activities for this text could be:

  • What equipment do you need to play ice hockey?
  • What is the purpose of this piece of text?

3. Behind the lines

Comprehension “behind the lines” is about the information we, the readers, already have. Our previous knowledge, our age, our social background and many other aspects change the way we understand and interpret a text. 

An example for the text above could be:

  • What countries do you think are famous for ice hockey?

Sometimes a lack of socio-cultural knowledge can lead to misunderstanding. Look at the text below. 

Is the relationship between Ms Turner and Jack Roberts formal or informal?

If your students are unaware of the convention of using Dear to start a letter in English, they may not answer this question correctly. 

Other “Behind the lines” literacy activities include:

  • Identifying the type of text
  • Imagining extra information based on the readers’ experiences 
  • Using existing knowledge to check a factual account
  • Identifying false information

Examples:

  • What job do you think Ms Turner has?
  • Do you think Jack lives in a village or a city?
  • Do wolves live in forests?

Literacy is more than reading

From the activities above, it’s clear that a literacy scheme develops more than reading skills. As students speculate and give their opinions, they talk and listen to each other. 

A literacy scheme can also develop writing skills. The text analysis gives students a model to follow in their writing. In addition, a literacy scheme works on higher-order thinking skills such as analysis, deduction and summary.

Developing literacy skills so that students become active, critical readers should be a key part of educational programs at all ages. Literacy activities based on a reading text can be especially useful for the foreign language class. 

With literacy activities, we can encourage students:

  • To use the text as a springboard for communicating ideas and opinions
  • To analyze the text as a model for writing activities
  • To see how language is used in context
  • To explore the meanings of words

More crucially, we are developing critical readers for the future.

About English Code

    6 ways to use AI to support your language learning

    AI is becoming a bigger part of our lives, including education and language learning. AI tools can give you more ways to practice a language. For example, you can use them to practice conversations or get feedback on your writing.

    But it is important to use AI in the right way. AI can be a useful extra tool for language learning. It can support your learning outside the classroom, but it cannot replace teachers, lessons or real-life communication with other people.

    Here are some simple ways to use AI to support your language learning.

    1. Practice conversations

    It is not always easy to find someone to practice speaking with. AI can give you another way to practice when you are studying by yourself. You can ask AI to have a conversation with you. For example, it could act as a shop assistant, a hotel receptionist or a new colleague.

    Try asking: “Have a simple conversation with me in Spanish about ordering food. Correct my mistakes after each answer.”

    Make sure you do the speaking yourself. Don't only read the AI's answers. Say your answers out loud and try to think in the language you are learning. This can be a useful way to get extra practice between lessons.

    2. Ask for hints

    When you are learning, it can be tempting to ask AI for the answer straight away. But you can learn more if you try to find the answer yourself first. Instead of asking for the answer, ask AI to give you a hint.

    For example: “Don't give me the answer. Give me a hint.”

    You could also ask: “Help me find and correct my mistake, but don't tell me the correct answer.”

    This gives you support while still letting you do the important thinking and learning.

    3. Get help with your writing

    AI can help you look at a short piece of writing in the language you are learning. You could use it to check an email, message or short paragraph. But try not to ask AI to rewrite everything for you. If it does all the work, you may not understand your mistakes.

    Instead, try asking: “Find three mistakes in my writing and explain why they are wrong. Don't rewrite the whole text.”

    Then, try to correct the mistakes yourself. You can also ask your teacher for feedback. Teachers can help you understand your mistakes and tell you what you need to practice next.

    4. Practice with topics you enjoy

    Language learning can feel more interesting when you practice with topics you like. You can ask AI to create simple activities about your hobbies or interests. This could be your favorite music, films, sport, food or travel.

    For example: “Create a B1-level German vocabulary quiz about football.”

    This can give you extra ways to practice words and language that interest you. You could even take some of the new vocabulary you learn and use it in your next lesson or in a conversation with someone else.

    5. Check the information AI gives you

    AI can make mistakes. Sometimes it may give you information that sounds correct but is actually wrong. It may also suggest words or sentences that are correct but do not sound natural. So, don't believe everything AI tells you without checking it.

    You can check information in a trusted dictionary, your course materials or another reliable language learning resource. You can also ask your teacher when you are not sure. Learning how to check information is an important skill, whether you are using AI or another source online.

    6. Keep learning with teachers and other people

    AI can give you more chances to practice, but it is only one tool. Teachers can explain difficult language, answer your questions and give you feedback that is right for your needs. Learning with other students can also help you share ideas and build confidence.

    Speaking with real people is important too. Real conversations can be different every time, and they help you learn how to listen and respond naturally. Use AI as one part of your language learning. Keep learning with teachers, classmates and other people too.

    Use AI to support your learning

    AI can give you new ways to practice a language, especially when you want to do some extra learning outside your lessons. You can use it to practice conversations, get hints, check your writing and explore topics you enjoy.

    But remember: AI is there to support your learning, not to replace your teacher or real-life communication.

    The most important part of language learning is still you. Keep listening, speaking, reading, writing, making mistakes and practising with other people. AI can be one useful tool to help you along the way.

    How can we help children (and ourselves) deal with turbulent situations?

    As humans, we are programmed to position ourselves according to the constants around us: people, structures and boundaries. When those constants shift, it can be unsettling for adults and children. Sometimes we find ourselves in unprecedented situations, and we each have our own approach to managing things. If you feel confused and without direction because of a turbulent situation, please know that is okay.

    We’ll look today at why that is, to help us understand ourselves a little more and why these simple mindfulness activities can help us navigate it.

    What causes social stress?

    There may be many reasons for feeling stressed in life, but during turbulent times in society, it is often due to not feeling safe. Something in our environment is alerting our survival instinct. This makes our brains produce stress hormones, which get us ready to fight the threat, run from it or freeze until it’s gone away. The threat might be to our physical or even social survival – and the two are linked. Things can feel even scarier when we also feel isolated from our social group, which keeps us protected from that threat.

    Human beings are social by nature. We live and work in communities, we connect through love and empathy and we protect each other. There’s truth to the saying “there’s safety in numbers”. But it’s not just about safety. We also define ourselves by comparing ourselves to others and working out what we are not.

    Research has found that we identify deeply with our role in society and the "pack" to which we belong. This holds deep ties with our sense of safety, contentment and self-esteem. If the boundaries by which we define and position ourselves have shifted or continue to shift, we will feel unsafe, threatened and therefore stressed.

    Are children affected by social stress in the same way?

    If we then apply this to children, the constants to whom they look for security are the adults in their life. If the adults are behaving differently, the children will feel a shift and feel unsafe and stressed too. If they don’t have their friends alongside them for social positioning, this too can lead to them feeling confused and uncertain. 

    Here are some key ways we can help:

    Communicating and listening

    Children may often lack the language to express what they are feeling, or even to recognize it themselves. Therefore, we must offer ways to help them make sense of the world around them,to help them feel safe, and to help express their concerns. Communication provides the necessary social interaction and models for them on how to handle the new situation. It firms up their boundaries and provides a safe space where they feel listened to and acknowledged, and this, in turn, helps diffuse their stress. The activity below is a lovely way to invite children to express any worry they might be feeling, mindfully and with support – and give them something to do with their feelings. It also helps them breathe fully and slowly, which can calm their nervous system.

    Breath activity: Worry bubbles

    1. Sit together and invite your child to put their palms together.
    2. Invite them to take a big breath in. As they breathe in, they can draw their palms further and further apart, spreading their fingers as they imagine blowing up a big bubble between their hands.
    3. Invite them to whisper a worry into the bubble.
    4. Invite them to blow the breath out nice and slowly. As they breathe out, they can imagine blowing the bubble (and the worry) away with a big sigh.
    5. Twinkle the fingers back down to the lap, and start again, either with the same worry or a new one

    Helping them find a safety anchor inside themselves

    By helping children focus on breathing, we can teach them that even if things feel wobbly around them, their breath is always there. The act of focusing on the breath also helps settle the fight-or-flight branch of their nervous system into a calmer, more balanced state.

    Breath Activity: Counting breaths

    1. Invite your child to sit with you.
    2. Invite them to place their hands on their tummy and breathe in slowly so they push into their hands, counting slowly up to four.
    3. As they breathe out, invite them to count up to six, as they slowly empty their belly and their hands lower back down.
    4. Continue until they feel calmer. You can do this every morning or evening to help sustain balance. With younger children, they might like a teddy on their tummy to push up and down.

    These two activities can be lovely daily practices to try and provide some safety and structure to your child or students’ mental health right now. They are also enjoyable activities to try for yourself – you may like to increase the in and out count of the breath a little bit for an adult breath.
