Pearson Education Takes Lead with Online-Course Offerings

Partnership Combines World’s Premier Online Course Management System with Richest Content


Vancouver, B.C. (June 17, 1999) – Pearson Education, the world’s leading online educational publisher, announced today at the first Universal Learning Technology (ULT) Conference plans to increase the number of its pre-built online resources for college courses in WebCT to more than 75 courses by year-end. The growth strategy is part of Pearson Education’s plan to leverage technology to transform education.

Pearson Education has partnered with ULT-owned WebCT, a leading online course management system, to provide college professors and students with the architecture and content for comprehensive online courses. WebCT builds Internet-based interactive teaching and learning software and applications that serve as companion tools to textbooks. Pearson Education delivers to WebCT users the richest educational content available, including editorial, self-assessment tools, study guides, lecture materials, exams, and relevant news stories. Pre-built online course resources correspond with some of the most popular textbooks from Pearson Education imprints, including Addison Wesley Longman, Allyn & Bacon, Prentice Hall, and Pearson Professional, Technical and Reference (PTR).

Colleges began using Pearson Education’s pre-built online college course resources in the fall 1998 semester. Offerings include such best-selling titles as Economics Today (Miller) and Management (Robbins, Coulter). Response from early adopters has been extremely positive, as faculty appreciate the opportunity to develop a much more robust online course using class-tested Pearson Education content, rather than start from scratch.
