Pearson Education Forms New Early Learning Group

Two Executive Appointments Announced

Upper Saddle River, NJ, April 26, 2000 - Pearson Education announced today the formation of the Pearson Education Early Learning Group. Kathy Costello, highly regarded as an educator, publisher, and authority in reading instruction and instructional design, will lead this important new publishing venture.

With increased government funding for early literacy and a market of over 12 million students, the Early Learning Group will expand Pearson Education’s reach into this growing institutional, consumer, and online marketplace. Over 65% of children 3-5 years old are enrolled in public or private programs and half of the 11 million children served through the federal government’s Title I programs are in prekindergarten to grade three.

Given the knowledge that what a child learns at three years will affect how he or she will perform in third grade, the Pearson Education Early Learning Group, under the leadership of Kathy Costello, is dedicating resources, research, and expertise to ensure that children, their teachers, and parents have access to research-based early learning programs that deliver prerequisite language and early literacy skills.

Commenting on this new appointment, Peter Jovanovich, Chief Executive Officer of Pearson Education, said, "Kathy Costello’s extraordinary record of achievement in creating works that truly help children learn makes her ideally suited for this new role." In addition to her distinguished career in educational publishing, Ms. Costello has taught at every level of education.

As President of the Early Learning Group, Ms. Costello is responsible for two current Pearson Education groups and the creation of two new enterprises. She will continue to oversee Electronic Education, the distributor for the Waterford Early Reading and Math programs, and the Pearson Education Development Group, the internal editorial, design, and production house.

New ventures to be launched by Ms. Costello include the Pearson Reading Center, an organization devoted to incubating and developing research-based products, and the Consumer Reading Initiative, an alliance with Headland Digital Media to develop online early childhood literacy programs.

In another announcement, Peter Jovanovich has appointed Bill Oldsey to the position of President of Pearson Education’s Elementary Group. This position was previously held by Ms. Costello. Mr. Jovanovich noted, "Bill Oldsey assumes this role with extensive management and strategic experience in educational publishing." Prior to the Pearson acquisition, Mr. Oldsey served as President of Silver Burdett Ginn and led the revitalization of Simon & Schuster’s elementary publishing operations. Previously, he was President of Higher Education’s Prentice Hall Business Publishing. During the past 18 months, Mr. Oldsey served as Pearson Education’s Senior Vice President, Planning and Market Development and also assumed interim leadership of Macmillan USA and Computer Curriculum Corporation.

Mr. Oldsey’s responsibilities as President of the Pearson Education Elementary Group include Scott Foresman, the leading elementary publisher; Pearson Learning, home of many of the most well-respected supplementary school learning brands; Computer Curriculum Corporation, the leading provider of e-learning solutions and services to the K-adult markets; and eVentures, an internal enterprise dedicated to next-generation K-12 products on the Internet.
