Pearson Education and the University of Phoenix Collaborate to Move Course Materials to Electronic Delivery

Pearson Education Custom Publishing to become key provider of e-textbooks for the Apollo Group’s University of Phoenix and its other subsidiaries.

Pearson Education, the world’s largest education business and the University of Phoenix, the largest private university in the United States, today announced a partnership which will accelerate the University’s move to convert its course materials to electronic delivery. The University of Phoenix is a subsidiary of the Apollo Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: APOL).

The collaboration will establish Pearson Education, through its Pearson Custom Publishing Division, as a key provider of e-textbooks for the University of Phoenix. Apollo’s other subsidiaries - the Institute for Professional Development, the College for Financial Planning and Western International University – will also benefit from the partnership.

Utilizing content from leading Pearson Education imprints Prentice Hall, Addison Wesley, Allyn & Bacon and Longman, custom electronic materials will be created covering a broad spectrum of disciplines including nursing, business, math, science and art history, among others. Pearson Custom Publishing will be the exclusive provider of content in the criminal justice program and will also provide content across all professional disciplines. The tailor-made electronic resources will be custom published to create e-textbooks that fit perfectly into the unique educational system of the Apollo Group.

“Apollo’s decision to use electronic materials and learning resources for all of our students – both on campus and online - is a major strategic initiative,” said Dr. John Sperling, Apollo Group chairman and CEO. “Our partnership with Pearson Education will further our efforts to provide the highest quality, leading edge materials to our students.”

“The Pearson Custom Publishing Group brings our market leading experience to our collaboration with the Apollo Group, whose initiatives in offering electronic content delivery to their students have been unprecedented,” said Will Ethridge, president of the Pearson Higher Education and Professional Group. “Our companies represent a best-of-breed partnership which I believe will be instrumental in setting the standard for electronic publishing in the higher education arena.”
