NCS Pearson awarded Afloat College Education contract by the Department of the Navy

NCS Pearson today announced it has been selected by the U.S. Department of the Navy to manage the Navy College Program for Afloat College Education (NCPACE). The program will deliver postsecondary education to U.S. Navy sailors deployed worldwide. NCS Pearson is a company of Pearson plc (NYSE: PSO), the international media and education company.

The five-year, $75 million contract will extend through 2006. Under this electronic learning contract, KEI Pearson, a wholly owned subsidiary of NCS Pearson's Government Solutions business, will serve as the prime contractor and provide program management and Government Solutions will provide systems development and the technology infrastructure. Other NCS Pearson and Pearson Education companies, colleges, universities, and subcontractors will provide education, products and services for the contract.

"As the world's leading education company, we are determined to combine the very best content, tools and technology in a highly integrated e-learning solution that meets the Navy's needs," said Mac Curtis, President, Government Solutions, NCS Pearson.

"This contract puts NCS Pearson and KEI Pearson products and instructors on-board every Navy ship and submarine, and with every aviation squadron. NCPACE is an essential component of our Navy College Program. In fact, NCPACE is the fastest growing education service in the Navy. We have very high expectations for the NCPACE program and for our partnership with KEI Pearson," said Dr. Allen Zeman, the Navy's Director of Naval Training and Education.

As an integral part of the Navy College Program, the NCPACE program will be available to over 85,000 sailors worldwide and will allow them to continue their postsecondary education while serving at sea. Through innovative solutions provided by the NCS Pearson team, Navy personnel will be able to access course material through a centralized e-learning web portal or through other electronic media, such as CD-ROMs. Sailors will also have the capability to attend 'virtual' online and instructor-led classes.

'It's all about educating sailors. The Navy chose the NCS Pearson team as their education integrator to deliver college courses because we had the experience in both the fields of education and technology,' stated Vicki Amundson, President, KEI Pearson.
