It is with the deepest regret that the Financial Times announces the death of Peter Martin, Chief Business Columnist and Associate Editor.
One of the leading financial journalists of his generation, Peter joined the FT in 1988 after a distinguished career in television and at the Economist. Through a succession of senior positions at the FT, including Deputy Editor, he played a vital role in the rapid international development of the newspaper, led the establishment of FT.com as a top business news website and wrote unique and brilliant columns for more than a decade.
Andrew Gowers, Financial Times editor, said: “Peter Martin was a towering figure in the modern development of the Financial Times. He played a pivotal part in establishing and extending the paper's international presence, in Europe, Asia and the US. He oversaw the rapid expansion of FT.com as the leading international business website. As a writer and editor he made a unique contribution to the ideas and insights expressed in the FT in all its forms. His commentary on business was without equal in its originality and wisdom, his writing unparalleled in flair, incisiveness and humour. More than that, he was a colleague whose modesty and openness made him an inspiration.”
Peter died after a typically spirited struggle against cancer. He was 54. He is survived by his wife Sandy and two daughters.
A memorial to Peter will be published on FT.com and in tomorrow’s newspaper.
