Award Winning English Language Learning Systems to be Integrated with
Pearson Digital Learning's Digital Curriculum Solutions
Scottsdale, AZ. - Pearson Education, the world's leading education company, today announced the acquisition of ELLIS, a provider of English language training software for kindergarten through adult learners. The company plans to integrate ELLIS into its Pearson Digital Learning (PDL) business unit, a leading provider of proven, research-based technology solutions for preK-12 learners.
With more than 5 million English language learners (ELL) in K-12 schools, ELL is the fastest growing subgroup within the Adequate Yearly Progress accountability requirements of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. On average, 22 percent of students in mainstream classrooms are English language learners, and the concentration of ELL students in urban areas has grown to almost 30 percent. The rapid growth rate of ELLs is driving a demand for supplemental instructional materials that adapt to their diverse needs. In international markets, over 2 billion students are learning English around the world.
"The benefits of the ELLIS acquisition are two-fold. The ELL market offers significant growth potential for us, and the ELLIS product line further strengthens Pearson Digital Learning's ability to meet the instructional needs of all K-12 learners," said Steve Dowling, president of Pearson's School companies. "The ELLIS products are complementary to PDL's market-leading elementary and secondary product lines both in instructional design and technology. Thus, they can be easily integrated into our existing sales efforts, and easily implemented by schools to serve their non-English speaking populations."
Based in Salt Lake City, ELLIS was founded in 1990 by Dr. Frank Otto, a professor of linguistics and pioneer in computer-based language instruction. The company offers a comprehensive suite of products containing more than 1,500 hours of interactive instruction for children through adults. ELLIS' English Language Learning programs are supported by help and translation in over 45 native languages, as well as an extensive library of print materials designed to provide additional reinforcement to the teaching and learning of English.
Said Rohit Patel, CEO of ELLIS, "The quality and effectiveness of the ELLIS products have been validated by the success of our customers around the world. ELLIS' award-winning learning products are sold to schools, universities, governments and language learning centers worldwide and will be implemented in numerous primary schools in Mexico this fall."
