Read for the Record raises $1.5 million for Early Education
On 2nd October more than 300,000 readers took part part in Jumpstart's Read for the Record campaign, breaking the world record for the number of people reading the same book on the same day and raising over $1.5 million for Jumpstart. Readers of all ages took part in activities across the US and further afield, reading the children's classic, Corduroy, published by Penguin Young Readers. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of early literacy. Pearson is the sponsor and founding partner and the funds raised will go towards Jumpstart's early education programmes in low-income communities.
For the third year in a row, the Pearson Foundation underwrote the publication of the campaign's official book, ensuring that 100% of the proceeds went towards Jumpstart. The Foundation worked with teachers, school districts, businesses and educational organisations to set up reading events on 2nd October and to distribute more than 100,000 copies of Corduroy to schools, teachers and education partners.
