FT raises $4.3 million for Room to Read

FT seasonal appeal 2009

The seasonal appeal of the Financial Times has raised more than $4.3 million on behalf of the charity Room to Read, which supports child literacy in the developing world. Room to Read builds libraries and schools, publishes local language children’s books and supports girls’ education in Asia and southern Africa.

“Thanks to the FT seasonal appeal, we will now be able to say ‘yes’ to funding educational projects that will reach tens of thousands of additional children,” said John Wood, the charity’s founder and executive chairman.

Contributions from FT readers to the appeal totalled $1.26 million, but the grand tally was far higher due to donations at special fundraising events, and companies and foundations which matched donations dollar for dollar and pound for pound.

The work of Room to Read was highlighted in a series of articles in the FT and on the newspaper’s website in November and December. The charity was chosen in a vote of FT staff around the world.
