This is one of nine courses that make up the full Professional Certificate in Telehealth and one of two courses that can be stacked toward a digital badge in Technology in Virtual Care.
Immersive technology, including virtual reality and augmented reality, are extending ways in which people learn and heal. In this course, you will explore current and evolving technologies, trends in spatial computing, and the application of immersive technologies. Immersive media offers hands-on experiences that provide highly engaging opportunities to facilitate skill building by professionals and patients, accelerate patient assessment, and deliver non-pharmacologic treatment. By reviewing concepts, history, and examples, learners will see an emerging ecosystem with the promise of meaningful impact while recognizing the need for continued attention to design, clinical integration, and social considerations.
Earn 10 continuing education hours
Participants who complete each course and evaluation are awarded 10 contact hours per course by the Northeastern University School of Nursing, accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
MaineHealth’s Office of Continuing Education is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Education (ACCME) and provides credit for the American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award. Maine Medical Center has designated these educational activities for up to 10 AMA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Dr. Susan Woods
MD, MPH
Susan Woods, MD, MPH, is boarded in internal medicine and medical informatics, and most recently Associate Professor at Oregon Health Sciences University. She brings deep experience in digital health and consumer informatics. She is Editor-in-Chief at the Journal of Participatory Medicine/Journal of Medical Internet Research, the official journal of the Society of Participatory Medicine. Dr. Woods is formerly Director of Patient Experience at the Veterans Health Administration’s Connected Care Office, where she helped develop and deploy the patient portal, mobile apps and telehealth services. She served as national lead for VA Open Notes, Blue Button and secure email, and architected the VA’s patient generated data solution. Her research focuses on the design, implementation and use of remote care, digital therapeutics, rural telehealth and digital inclusion. Dr. Woods is on the Maine Medical Association and Maine Technology Institute’s IT Board, and previously served as the telehealth representative for Maine’s ConnectME broadband authority. She practices part-time for Southern Maine Healthcare, and is co-founder of GeneratedHealth, a digital health services startup.
Dr. Woods completed medical school and fellowship in informatics at Oregon Health Sciences University, and health services fellowship at the University of Washington.

Rafael J. Grossmann
MD, FACS
Originally from Venezuela, trained in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Dr. Rafael Grossmann has been a full-time practicing surgeon in Maine, USA. Dr. Rafael Grossmann specialties include General, Trauma, Advanced Laparoscopic, and Robotic Assisted Surgery. Dr. Rafael Grossmann also focused on the convergence of Healthcare and Technology Innovation, enabling Digital Health Transformation and enhancing Healthcare and Education. Dr. Rafael Grossmann performed the first ever documented live Google Glass-assisted surgery in 2013. Dr. Rafael Grossmann is an advisor in Digital Health to multiple companies and also a multi-TEDx speaker.
