Shaking things up in the new year

The new year is a time for new starts, and shaking things up.

And Steven Mintz's "Six Transformational Ideas for the New Year" in Inside Higher Education certainly do.

Academic innovation is not simply about placing lectures online; Mintz's ideas question conventional practice. For example, he addresses issues of scale and proposes breaking up classes, alternative start dates and a coach to support students in order to deal with large classes. Further, he says sophisticated courseware is "a textbook on steroids" that should be "immersive, adaptive, and highly interactive... contain[ing] sophisticated diagnostics and embed[ding] remediation and enrichment".

Controversial? Or is this predicting the future?
