Changing Britain’s perception of maths… how can education and business leaders ensure every child masters the subject?

On Thursday 8th November, Pearson’s Power of Maths Roundtable will see leading influencers across education, maths and business come together to discuss and unlock contemporary issues facing mathematics in Britain today.

The free event held in central London, will be chaired by distinguished education journalist and Tes editor, Ann Mroz, and include thought-provoking sessions from award-winning maths teacher and comedian, Kyle Evans, as well as leading academic and founder of Maths Through Stories, Dr Vincent Natthapoj Vincent Trakulphadetkrai.

Explore pressing topics in maths education

The roundtable will provide an opportunity to explore and discuss pressing topics in maths education, including:

  • Eradicating ‘I can’t do maths’ from British culture - are there systemic barriers to progress?
  • Can growth mindset and teaching for mastery develop the STEM workforce of tomorrow?
  • An innovative mathematics teaching approach that goes beyond just teaching for Mastery: The case of learning mathematics by creating mathematical story picture books
  • Anxiety or confidence? Uncovering attitudes to subject knowledge and textbooks within the teaching community

Who are our speakers?

Ann Mroz - Chair
Ann Mroz is a British-Polish journalist who is currently editor and digital publishing director of the TES (Times Educational Supplement). She is a trustee of the charity Shine and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She is on the education advisory group of the Sutton Trust, the advisory board of the Education Endowment Foundation and the advisory board of the Education Policy Institute.

Kyle Evans - Speaker
Kyle is a folk singing mathematician, comedian & teacher who was the 2016 UK winner of Famelab, an international competition to find the most exciting new voices in science communication. He has talked & sung about maths & pop at various festivals including Cheltenham Science Festival, Blissfields and Blue Dot and has appeared on BBC Radio 4’s cult numbers show ‘More or Less.’

Dr. Natthapoj Vincent Trakulphadetkrai - Speaker
Dr. Trakulphadetkrai (or simply Vince) is Lecturer in Primary Mathematics Education at the University of Reading, and founder of MathsThroughStories.org, which aims to enrich mathematics teaching and learning experiences through storytelling. Since its launch in 2017, the website has been viewed over 177,000 times by more than 30,000 teachers and parents from over 160 countries around the world.
