Prepare. Practice. Review.
Mike Sullivan’s time-tested approach focuses students on the fundamental skills they need for the course: preparing for class, practicing with homework, and reviewing the concepts. The Tenth Edition of the flagship Precalculus Series has evolved to meet today’s course needs.
With the new editions, Mike Sullivan focuses on MyMathLab features that help better prepare students and get them thinking more visually and conceptually. Features like Getting Ready exercises, Video Assessment exercises, Enhanced Graphing Functionality, and Skills for Success modules benefit student learning. The new Guided Lecture Notes help students focus on the important concepts and structure their studying, so they have the most effective tools to succeed.
Features
How does this series help students succeed?
Based on 30 years of teaching experience, Michael Sullivan has developed these texts to benefit student preparation and retention of mathematical concepts.
- Every section begins by asking Are You Prepared? This lists the topics needed for that section, and has review exercises so students can be confident that they are fully caught up.
- Section objectives are clearly listed, so students always know what they need to study.
- Abundant examples are each followed by a Now Work exercise, so students can immediately apply the concepts.
- The extensive Chapter Review material includes a list of Things to Know and helps students review all objectives so that they can be sure they are prepared for exams.
How does this series help students prepare for Calculus?
Michael Sullivan developed key features to reinforce connections to Calculus.
- Calculus references appear where appropriate, and correct calculus notation is introduced, such as in the discussion on asymptotes and limits.
- Key terms are defined as they would be in a calculus course—e.g., limits, difference quotient, local maximum and minimum, absolute maximum and minimum—and the author often uses graphs to ask questions about these concepts.
- Calculus icons alert students to concepts and skills that they will see again when they reach a calculus course.
How do exercises and applications in this series benefit student learning?
Michael Sullivan is known for developing quality exercises that cover a vast variety of concepts, which ultimately helps students retain mathematical concepts.
- Are You Prepared? problems appear at the start of every exercise set and help students determine exactly what they need to review, with page references if they need it.
- Concepts and Vocabulary questions are fill-in-the-blank and true/false problems that check that students read and understand the section.
- Skill Building problems provide straightforward practice, are sorted by difficulty, and are correlated to section examples.
- Applications and Extensions allow students to apply their skills to real-world problems and expand on concepts learned in that section. Many involve sourced information and data to bring relevance and timeliness to students' assignments.
- Writing and Research problems support class discussion, the verbalization of mathematical ideas, and writing and research projects.
- NEW | Retain Your Knowledge exercises help students recall skills and concepts from previous chapters. These are excellent cumulative review problems and are perfect for studying for final exams.

The Authors

Michael Sullivan
Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, earned his PhD in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years before recently retiring. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and divides his time between Oak Lawn, IL and Naples, FL.
Mike is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. He is a past president of the Text and Academic Authors Association and is currently Treasurer of its Foundation.
He is a member of the TAA Council of Fellows and was awarded the TAA Mike Keedy award in 1997 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In addition, he represents TAA on the Authors Coalition of America.
Mike has been writing textbooks for more than 35 years and currently has 15 books in print, twelve with Pearson Education. When not writing, he enjoys tennis, golf, gardening, and travel.Mike has four children: Kathleen teaches college mathematics; Michael III teaches college mathematics and is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan works in publishing; and Colleen teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

Michael Sullivan III
Michael Sullivan III is a full-time professor of mathematics at Joliet Jr. College. His training is in mathematics, statistics, and economics and he has more than 18 years experience as an instructor.
Mike Sullivan III has developed Author in Action videos for the flagship Precalculus Series, authored by his father, Mike Sullivan. The Author in Action videos also include video assessment exercises, which assess students' conceptual understanding of the mathematics presented. The new Guided Lecture Notes help students take thorough, organized notes while watching the videos. Mike Sullivan III is also the co-author on the Sullivan/Sullivan Concepts Through Functions Precalculus Series (© 2015) and Sullivan/Sullivan Precalculus Series Enhanced with Graphing Utilities (© 2014).
His publications with Pearson cover developmental math, precalculus, and introductory statistics. Most recently, Mike has been highly involved in Course Redesign at Joliet Junior College. His experience in course redesign and writing texts for the college-level math and statistics courses gives him a unique insight into where students are headed after the developmental math track, and what they need to do to be successful. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer.
