Anterior refers to the front of the body or a body part.
Posterior means toward the back of the body or a body part.
Superior or cranial means toward the head.
Inferior or caudal means away from the head or toward the tail.
They are used to describe positions on the head, neck, and trunk, not on the limbs.
Proximal means closer to the point of origin, such as the shoulder or hip joint.
Distal means farther away from the point of origin, like the shoulder or hip joint.
The shoulder joint is the point of origin for the upper limb.
The hip joint is the point of origin for the lower limb.
Medial refers to a position closer to the body's midline.
Lateral means farther away from the body's midline.
An imaginary line running down the middle of the whole body.
They refer to the midline of the whole body, not individual parts.
Superficial refers to structures closer to the surface of the body.
