  • Crest

Narrow ridge of bone that serves as a site of muscle and ligament attachment.

  • Epicondyle

Raised area on or above a condyle, important for muscle and ligament attachment.

  • Line

Narrow ridge of bone smaller than a crest, site for muscle or ligament attachment.

  • Process

Any bony prominence (projection) on a bone.

  • Spine

Sharp, slender projection on a bone.

  • Trochanter

Large irregularly shaped projection found on bones, especially the femur.

  • Tubercle

Small rounded projection on a bone.

  • Tuberosity

Large rounded projection, usually rough, for muscle attachment.

  • Condyle

Rounded projection for articulation with another bone.

  • Facet

Smooth, flat area for articulation between bones.

  • Head

Enlargement carried on a neck of a bone, usually for articulation.

  • Ramus

Round or flattened extension from the body of a bone, arm-like in shape.

  • Canal

Tube-like opening in a bone for passage of blood vessels and nerves.

  • Fissure

Narrow opening, may be irregular in shape, allowing passage of structures.

  • Foramen

Round or oval hole, smaller than a canal or meatus, for vessels or nerves.

  • Groove

Narrow furrow through which some other structure runs.

  • Notch

Indentation at the edge of a structure in a bone.

  • Body

    Main part of a bone.

  • Fossa

Basinlike area, often shallowly depressed on a bone.

  • Meatus

Canal-like opening passageway in a bone.

  • Neck

Narrowed region at one end of a long bone.

  • Sinus

Cavity within a bone, air filled and lined by mucous membrane.

  • Wing

Flat region, often with some curvature on a bone.
