Terms in this set (8)
List the layers of the Epidermis. Describe each layer.
1.Basale Layer: Deepest Layer. Makes new cells.
2.Spinosum Layer: Thickest Layer. Makes Keratin
3.Granulosum Layer: Forms water barrier
4.Lucidum Layer: Clear dead cell layer. Only in thick skin.
5.Corneum: Dead flat keratinized cell
Define Apoptosis. Why is it Important?
Apoptosis: Programmed cell death. Helps remove damaged cells and gets replaced with new cells.
Define Cyanosis and Jaundice. What conditions could cause each of these symptoms?
Cyanosis: Bluish skin. From low oxygen in blood. Causes breathing problems
Jaundice: Yellow-Orange Skin/eyes. From Bilirubin Buildup. Causes dark urine.
Differentiate between Eccrine and Apocrine Sweat Glands.
Eccrine: Watery sweat. Opens skin pores and cools body.
Apocrine: Found in Armpits/Anal area. Opens Hair Follicle and causes odor.
Describe the functions of the Integumentary System .
1.Protection
2.Sensation
3.Thermoregulation
4.Excretion
5.Vitamin D
Define Benign, Metastasis, Tumor, & ABCD Rule.
Benign: Stays in one place
Metastasis: Cancer spreading to other tissues
Tumor: Cluster of Abnormal cells
ABCD Rule: used to check moles or skin spots for possible melanoma (skin cancer)
Asymmetry
Border Irregular
Color Varies
Diameter
Describe the 3 degrees of burn. What is the rule of 9?
1st Degree Burn: Epidermis Only. Red, mild pain.
2nd Degree Burn: Epidermis + Dermis. Painful, blisters.
3rd Degree Burn: Full thickness. Deep tissue/nerve damage.
Rule Of 9? Estimates the % of body fluid/body burn in adults.
Describe some of the treatments for burns. What is Debridement?
1st Degree Burn: Pain Meds. Rinse with room temp water.
2nd Degree Burn: Use Topicals
3rd Degree Burn: IV Fluids + skin Grafts
Debridement: Removal of dead/damaged tissues from a burn.
