superior and inferior
refers to placement of a structure along the long axis of the body.
anterior and posterior
the most anterior structures are those that are most forward, posterior structures are those toward the backside of the body.
medial and lateral
toward the midline and away from the midline or medial plane
cephalad (cranial) and caudal
toward the head and toward the tail
ventral and dorsal
used interchangeably with anterior and posterior
proximal and distal
used primarily to locate various areas of the body limbs, nearer the trunk of attached end/farther from the truck or point of attachment.
