1/3
  • Formed elements of blood

    1. Erythrocytes (RBCs) - no nucleus/organelles,

    2. Leukocytes (WBCs) - the only formed element which is a TRUE CELL (i.e. has a nucleus)

    3. Thrombocytes (platelets) - cell fragments important in clotting, not a true cell

  • Major components of whole blood

    1. Plasma (~55%)

      • Least dense component

    2. Formed Elements (~45-46%)

      • Buffy coat (~<1%) - sits between RBCs and Plasma when whole blood is centrifuged

        • Leukocytes + platelets

      • RBCs (~45%)

        • Most dense component

  • Hematocrit

Percentage of whole blood that are erythrocytes

    Norm male hematocrit = 42-52%

    Norm female hematocrit = 38-47%
