  • Epidermis

The outermost layer of skin providing a protective barrier.
  • Papillary layer

The upper layer of the dermis composed of loose connective tissue that supports the epidermis.
  • Reticular layer

The deeper, thicker layer of the dermis made of dense connective tissue providing strength and elasticity.
  • Eccrine sweat gland

A sweat gland that produces watery sweat for thermoregulation.
  • Arrector pili muscle

A small muscle attached to hair follicles that causes hair to stand up (goosebumps).
  • Sebaceous (oil) gland

A gland that secretes sebum to lubricate and waterproof the skin and hair.
  • Hair follicle

A structure in the dermis from which hair grows.
  • Hair root

The part of the hair located below the skin surface within the follicle.
  • Sensory nerve fiber with free nerve endings

Nerve fibers in the skin that detect pain, temperature, and touch.
  • Dermal vascular plexus

A network of blood vessels in the dermis supplying nutrients and regulating temperature.
  • Lamellar corpuscle

A sensory receptor in the skin that detects pressure and vibration.
  • Hair follicle receptor (root hair plexus)

A sensory nerve ending that detects hair movement.
  • Adipose tissue

Fat tissue located beneath the dermis that provides insulation and cushioning.
