1/20
  • Axial skeleton

The part of the skeleton consisting of the skull, vertebral column, and rib cage.

  • Appendicular skeleton

The part of the skeleton that includes the limbs and girdles (shoulder and pelvic girdles).

  • Sesamoid bone

A small, round bone embedded within a tendon, often found near joints.

  • Epiphysis

The rounded end part of a long bone, which articulates with adjacent bones.

  • Diaphysis

The shaft or central part of a long bone.

  • Articular cartilage

A smooth, white tissue that covers the ends of bones where they come together to form joints.

  • Periosteum

A dense layer of vascular connective tissue enveloping the bones except at the surfaces of the joints.

  • Perichondrium

A layer of dense irregular connective tissue that surrounds cartilage of developing bone.

  • Endosteum

A thin vascular membrane lining the inner surface of the bony tissue that forms the medullary cavity of long bones.

  • Epiphyseal plate

A hyaline cartilage plate in the metaphysis at each end of a long bone where bone growth occurs in children and adolescents.

  • Nutrient artery

The artery that enters the bone through the nutrient foramen to supply blood to the bone marrow and inner bone.

  • Nutrient foramen

A small opening in the bone through which the nutrient artery passes.

  • Compact bone

The dense, hard outer layer of bone that provides strength and protection.

  • Spongy bone

The porous, inner part of bone that contains red marrow and is made up of trabeculae.

  • Trabeculae

The lattice-like network of thin bony plates in spongy bone that provides structural support.

  • Diploe

The spongy bone layer between the inner and outer layers of the cortical bone of the skull.

  • Red marrow

The soft tissue found in spongy bone that produces blood cells.

  • Osteon

The fundamental functional unit of compact bone, consisting of concentric lamellae surrounding a central canal.

  • Lacuna

A small cavity within bone matrix that contains an osteocyte.

  • Interstitial lamellae

Layers of bony matrix found between osteons in compact bone, filling spaces and contributing to bone strength.
