Background
For a reaction aA + bB ⇌ cC + dD, K = (activities of products)coeff / (activities of reactants)coeff. We approximate activities with concentrations for Kc and with partial pressures for Kp. Conversion uses Kp = Kc(RT)Δn with Δn = (sum ν gases products − sum ν gases reactants).
How to use this calculator
- Kc mode: enter concentrations (mol/L) for gases/aqueous. Solids/liquids are auto-excluded.
- Kp mode: enter partial pressures (atm) for gases only. Non-gases are auto-excluded.
- Optionally provide T to convert Kc ⇄ Kp with Δn (gases).

Examples
Example 1 (Kp, heterogeneous)
CaCO₃(s) ⇌ CaO(s) + CO₂(g). Only the gas appears in Kp: Kp = P(CO₂).
Example 2 (Kc, aqueous)
Fe³⁺ + SCN⁻ ⇌ FeSCN²⁺. Kc = [FeSCN²⁺]/([Fe³⁺][SCN⁻]).
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why do solids & liquids drop out?
Their activity is ~1, so they don’t appear in K expressions.
Q: What if one side ends up empty?
That side becomes 1. This often happens in heterogeneous equilibria.
Q: Which units for Kp?
Use atm so R = 0.082057 and the (RT)Δn conversion is consistent.
