  • Median or Mid-sagittal plane

A sagittal plane that divides the body into equal right and left halves.
  • Para-sagittal planes

Sagittal planes parallel to the median plane but do not divide the body into equal halves.
  • Coronal or Mid-Frontal plane

A frontal plane that divides the body into equal anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts.
  • Para-frontal planes

Frontal planes parallel to the mid-frontal plane but do not divide the body into equal parts.
  • Transverse (Horizontal) plane

A plane that divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts.
  • Anatomical position

Body standing upright, facing forward, arms at sides with palms facing forward.
  • Anterior (ventral)

Refers to the front or belly side of the body.
  • Posterior (dorsal)

Refers to the back side of the body.
  • Superior (cephalic or cranial)

Toward the head or upper part of the body.
  • Inferior (caudal)

Away from the head, toward the lower part of the body.
  • Medial

Toward the midline of the body.
  • Lateral

Away from the midline of the body.
  • Intermediate

Between a more medial and a more lateral structure.
  • Bilateral

Present on both sides of the body.
  • Proximal

Closer to the origin or point of attachment of a limb to the trunk.
  • Distal

Farther from the origin or point of attachment of a limb to the trunk.
  • Superficial (external)

Toward or on the surface of the body.
  • Deep (internal)

Away from the surface, more internal.
  • Supine

    Body lying face up.
  • Prone

    Body lying face down.
  • Orbital region

    The area around the eyes.
  • Buccal region

    The cheek area.
  • Otic region

    The ear area.
  • Oral region

    The mouth area.
  • Nasal region

    The nose area.
  • Frontal region

    The forehead area.
  • Mental region

    The chin area.
  • Cranial cavity

The dorsal cavity that houses the brain.
  • Spinal cavity

The dorsal cavity that encloses the spinal cord.
  • Thoracic cavity

The ventral cavity containing the lungs and heart.
  • Pleural cavity

The space surrounding each lung within the thoracic cavity.
  • Mediastinum

The central compartment of the thoracic cavity containing the heart, trachea, and esophagus.
  • Pericardial cavity

The space within the mediastinum that surrounds the heart.
  • Abdominopelvic cavity

The ventral cavity below the diaphragm, subdivided into abdominal and pelvic cavities.
  • Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ)

Abdominal quadrant containing the liver, gallbladder, and part of the pancreas.
  • Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ)

Abdominal quadrant containing the stomach, spleen, and part of the pancreas.
  • Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ)

Abdominal quadrant containing the appendix and parts of the intestines.
  • Left Lower Quadrant (LLQ)

Abdominal quadrant containing parts of the intestines and reproductive organs.
