Understand that cytokinesis is the process that physically separates the daughter cells after mitosis.
Recognize that in animal cells, cytokinesis occurs through the formation of a cleavage furrow.
The cleavage furrow is created by a contractile ring composed of actin and myosin filaments, which pinches the cell membrane inward.
As the contractile ring tightens, the furrow deepens until the cell is pinched into two separate daughter cells.
Note that this process is different in plant cells, where a cell plate forms to divide the cells due to the presence of a rigid cell wall.
