Cell Organelles and Their Functions

I pulsanti di controllo sono stati cambiati in modalità "navigazione".
1/21
  • Nucleus

Houses DNA, site for synthesis of ribosomes

  • Mitochondria

Site of many steps of cellular respiration. Oval shaped organelle with a double membrane; a smooth outer membrane and a convoluted inner membrane.

  • Ribosomes

Organelles that synthesize proteins by translating messenger RNA.

  • Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)

A network of membranes involved in protein and lipid synthesis. Rough ER has ribosomes; smooth ER does not.

  • Golgi Apparatus

Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids for storage or transport out of the cell.

  • Lysosomes

Contain enzymes that digest and break down waste materials and cellular debris for reuse in the cell

  • Chloroplasts

Found in plant cells, they perform photosynthesis to convert sunlight into chemical energy.

  • Cell Membrane

A selectively permeable barrier that controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell. Separates the interior from the exterior of the cell

  • Cell Wall

Role in cell shape, protection, and support

  • Cytoplasm

The jelly-like fluid inside the cell where organelles are suspended and cellular processes occur. Metabolic reactions take place in here

  • Vacuole

A storage organelle that holds water, nutrients, and waste. Large in plant cells for maintaining turgor pressure. Involved in water balance

  • Centrioles

Organelles involved in cell division by helping organize the mitotic spindle.

  • Peroxisomes

Contain enzymes that break down fatty acids and detoxify harmful substances.

  • Cytoskeleton

Responsible for cell shape, anchor organelles, internal transport of molecules, overall cell movement

  • Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum

Ribosomes assemble protein; once inside the ER, proteins are folded and modified.

  • Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

Synthesis of lipids and steroid hormones; detoxification of medications

  • Flagella

Long, whip-like structures that provide motility to some cells.

  • Cilia

Short, hair-like structures that move fluid or cells across the cell surface.

  • Nucleolus

Located inside the nucleus, it is responsible for ribosome production.

  • Chromatin

Complex of DNA and proteins in the nucleus that condenses to form chromosomes during cell division.

  • Vesicle

Used for transporting cell product from ER to Golgi and Golgi to cell membrane and back
