  • Alveolate-Apicomplexans


    Protozoans with alveoli, small membrane bound cavities. Many apicomplexans use schizogony. They have special intracellular organelles at their apices. Examples are Toxoplasmosis, Plasmodium and Cryptosporidium.

  • Amoeba


    Amoebas has lobe-shaped pseudopods. Free living and does not form aggregates. Examples Entamoeba and Naegleria.

  • Euglena


    Mitochondria have disc shaped cristae. Photoautotrophic single cell organisms with chloroplast. Food is stored in paramylon. They have a flexible, helical protein pellicle under the cell membrane . They have an eyespot and a flagellu.

  • Giardia


    A member of the protozoan group Diplomonadida, who lack mitochondria, peroxisomes, and Golgi bodies. They do have mitosomes, rudimentary mitochondria. They have two nuclei and multiple flagella. May cause diarrhea and bloating in humans when ingested as cysts.

  • Trypanosoma


    Chaga's disease caused by Trypanosoma curzi; transmitted by the kissing bug. African sleeping sickness is transmitted by the tsetse fly. and is caused by Trypanosoma brucei.

  • Trichomonas


    Trichomonas vaginalis causes trichomoniasis, a STD. In females causes a yellow-green vaginal discharge and vaginal irritation. In males it may be asymptomatic.

    This is an example of a kinetoplastid.

  • Leishmania


    An example of a kinetoplastid. The causative agent of three forms of leishmaniasis; cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral. It is a disease of animals transmitted to humans by the sand fly.
