  • Metabolism

The sum of all biochemical reactions within a cell. Catabolism breaks down molecules to release energy and anabolism builds the macromolecules of the cell which requires energy.

  • NAD+

Becomes NADH when is it reduced. Carries electrons to the electron transport chain where is is oxidized.

  • Substrate level phosphorylation

involves the transfer of phosphate from a phosphorylated organic molecule to ADP. This is one way to synthesize ATP.

  • oxidative phosphorylation

Energy from redox reactions in the electron transport chain is used to add an inorganic phosphate group to ADP using ATP synthase. ATP synthase uses the energy of the proton gradient generated by the electron transport chain.

  • Photophosphorylation

Energy obtained from a photon of light is used bond an inorganic phosphate group to ADP to yield ATP.

  • Enzyme

Organic catalysts that increase the rate of a chemical reaction and are NOT permanently changed in the process.

Enzyme+ Substrate yields ES which yields Enzyme + Product

  • Active site of an enzyme

The site that substrates fit into on an enzyme that leads to the substate being catalyzed into a product.
