  • Atom

    Basic unit of matter.

  • Nucleus

    The center of the atom.

  • Electron

Negatively charged particle that makes up the atom.

  • Proton

Positively charged particle in the nucleus of the atom.

  • Neutron

Particle inside the nucleus of an atom with no charge.

  • Element

Pure substance made of only ONE type of atom.

  • Isotope

Atom of the same element that has a different number of neutrons.

  • Compound

Chemical combination of more than one element in definite proportions.

  • Ionic Bond

One or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another (creates ions).

  • Ion

Atoms with either a positive or negative charge.

  • Covalent Bond

Electrons travel around the nuclei of both atoms (shared electrons).

  • Hydrogen Bond

Weak attraction between a hydrogen atom and another atom.

  • Molecule

    Smallest unit of most compounds.

  • Van der Waals Forces

Intermolecular forces of attraction weaker than ionic and covalent bonds.

  • Solution

Even distribution of components in a mixture.

  • Solvent

Substance in which the solute dissolves.

  • pH

Measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+).

  • Acid

Any compound that forms H+ ions in solution (pH < 7).

  • Base

Any compound that produces hydroxide ions (OH-) in solution (pH > 7).

  • Carbohydrates

Compounds made of CHO (Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen); main energy source for living things.

  • Lipids

Fats, oils, waxes; composed of a glycerol molecule and fatty acids (CHO).

  • Proteins

Macromolecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen units called amino acids.

  • Enzymes

Catalysts that speed chemical reactions in cells.

  • Activation Energy

Minimum amount of energy needed to start a reaction.

  • Catalyst

Substance that speeds the rate of a chemical reaction by lowering activation energy required.

  • Nucleic Acids

Macromolecules containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus (CHONP); polymers made of nucleotides.

  • Polysaccharides

Complex carbohydrates composed of many monosaccharides.

  • Disaccharides

Complex carbohydrate made of two sugars bound chemically.

  • Law of Conservation of Matter

Mass and energy do NOT change during chemical reactions.
