  • What is the standard anatomical position?

The body is standing upright, facing forward, feet flat and slightly apart, arms at the sides with palms facing forward.

  • Define the term superior (cranial).

Toward the head end or upper part of a structure or the body; above.

  • Define the term inferior (caudal).

Away from the head end or toward the lower part of a structure or the body; below.

  • What does anterior (ventral) mean?

Toward or at the front of the body; in front of.

  • What does posterior (dorsal) mean?

Toward or at the back of the body; behind.

  • Define medial.

Toward or at the midline of the body; on the inner side of.

  • Define lateral.

Away from the midline of the body; on the outer side of.

  • What is meant by intermediate?

Between a more medial and a more lateral structure or more medial and lateral.

  • Define proximal.

Closer to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk.

  • Define distal.

Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk.

  • What does superficial (external) mean?

Toward or at the body surface.

  • What does deep (internal) mean?

Away from the body surface; more internal.

  • What are the two major divisions of the body?

Axial (head, neck, trunk) and appendicular (limbs).

  • What are the three main body planes?

Sagittal (divides left and right), frontal (coronal) (divides front and back), and transverse (horizontal) (divides top and bottom).

  • What is a midsagittal plane?

A sagittal plane that lies exactly in the midline, dividing the body into equal left and right halves.

  • What is a parasagittal plane?

A sagittal plane offset from the midline, dividing the body into unequal left and right parts.

  • What are the two main body cavities?

Dorsal body cavity and ventral body cavity.

  • What are the subdivisions of the dorsal body cavity?

Cranial cavity (houses the brain) and vertebral cavity (houses the spinal cord).

  • What are the subdivisions of the ventral body cavity?

Thoracic cavity (contains pleural cavities, mediastinum, pericardial cavity) and abdominopelvic cavity (abdominal and pelvic cavities).

  • What is the function of serous membranes in the ventral body cavity?

They are thin, double-layered membranes that cover surfaces in the ventral body cavity and secrete serous fluid to reduce friction.
