  • Simple Squamous Epithelium

Single layer of flat, disc-shaped cells with sparse cytoplasm and central nuclei. Function: diffusion and filtration. Locations: lung air sacs, kidney glomerulus, blood and lymphatic vessels.

  • Stratified Squamous Epithelium

Multiple layers of cells; basal cells are cuboidal or columnar, apical cells are flat. Function: protection. Locations: esophagus, vagina, and epidermis of skin.

  • Simple Cuboidal Epithelium

Single layer of cube-shaped cells with large, spherical central nuclei. Functions in secretion and absorption. Found in kidney tubules, ducts of glands, and ovary surface.

  • Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium

Multiple layers (usually 2) of cube-shaped cells. Functions mainly in secretion. Location: sweat glands and female mammary glands.

  • Simple Columnar Epithelium

Single layer of tall cells with round or oval nuclei, often containing goblet cells. Functions in absorption and secretion. Found in most of the digestive tract including stomach and intestines.

  • Stratified Columnar Epithelium

Multiple layers of columnar cells. Rare, found in small amounts in pharynx, male urethra, and some glandular ducts.

  • Transitional Epithelium

Lines ureters, bladder, and part of the urethra. Resembles stratified squamous but stretches to accommodate volume changes.

  • Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium (Ciliated)

Single layer of cells of varying heights with nuclei at different levels, giving a stratified appearance. Contains cilia and goblet cells. Found in upper respiratory tract like trachea and nasal cavity.

  • Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium (Nonciliated)

Similar to ciliated type but without cilia. Found in males’ sperm-carrying ducts.

  • Function of Simple Squamous Epithelium

Allows diffusion and filtration due to thin, flat cells.

  • Function of Stratified Squamous Epithelium

Provides protection against abrasion and pathogens.

  • Function of Simple Cuboidal Epithelium

Secretion and absorption in glands and kidney tubules.

  • Function of Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium

Secretion in sweat and mammary glands.

  • Function of Simple Columnar Epithelium

Absorption and secretion, often with mucus secretion by goblet cells.

  • Location of Simple Squamous Epithelium

Air sacs of lungs, kidney glomerulus, lining of blood and lymphatic vessels.

  • Location of Stratified Squamous Epithelium

    Esophagus, vagina, epidermis of skin.

  • Location of Simple Cuboidal Epithelium

Kidney tubules, ducts of glands, ovary surface.

  • Location of Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium

    Sweat glands, female mammary glands.

  • Location of Simple Columnar Epithelium

Most of the digestive tract including stomach and intestines.

  • Location of Transitional Epithelium

Ureters, urinary bladder, part of urethra.
