  • Four Primary Categories of Tissue

    Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nervous

  • How is Epithelium Catorgerized?

    Shapes= Columnar, squamous, and cuboidal

    Layers= Simple(1 layer), Pseudostratified(1 layer but looks like multiple), and Stratified (multiple layers)

  • What is Cilia?

    cell projection, moves materials along cell surface. (broom)

  • What are Goblet cells?

    cup like cells that produce mucus

  • Basement Membrane

    (cell glue) connects epithelium and connective tissue. is non-living.

  • Apical Surface

    top surface of epithelial tissues. may have cilia attached

  • Basal Surface

    bottom surface of epithelium tissues. connects basement membrane.

  • Osseous Tissue

    Compact bone, is structual

  • Loose Areolar Connective Tissue

    -few fibers, lots of open fluid-filled space, very vascular, very flexible.

    -supports epithelium & provides protective covering of internal organs

  • Dense Regular Fibrous Connective Tissue

    -Packed w/ thick collagen fibers "dense"

    -fibers run parallel to one another "regular pattern"

    -found in tendons and ligaments

  • Cartilage + Types

    (chondrocytes) . Within caves in the matrix called lacunae.

    Hyaline(most common)(medium bendy) , Fibrocartilage(least bendy), Elastic(most bendy)

  • Extracellular Matrix

    -nonliving/ not made of cells -outside of cells -often made and secreted by cells -composed of protein fibers and ground substance

  • Protein Fibers

    Collagen- (most common) strength +flexibility

    Reticular- delicate support + framework

    Elastic- Can stretch without breaking

  • Ground Substance

    Fills space between cells, can be fluid, gel, or hard consistency. Depending on consistency can also be called: Tissue fluid, Interstitial fluid, Extracellular Fluid (ECF), or Tissue gel.

  • Body Membranes + Types

    Composed of 1 or more types of tissues. Cutaneous, Mucous, Synovial, Serous

  • Cutaneous Membrane

    -Skin

    -Only external Membrane

    -Only dry Membrane

  • Serous Membrane

    -3 P's Pericardium, R+L Pleural membrane, Peritoneum

    -Each serous membrane is a double layer

    Visceral=on surface of organ

    Parietal=outer layer

  • Mucous Memebranes

    -Lines all passages that open to the out. (respiratory, digestive, reproductive, urinary)

    -Contains goblet cells which secrete protective and/or lubricating mucus

  • Synovial Membranes

    -Only tissue membrane that doesn't have epithelial tissue

    -Connective tissue membrane

    -Important in lubrication of joints
