  • Olfactory nerve (I)

Conveys somatic sensory impulses from nasal cavities to the olfactory bulb of the cerebrum.

  • Optic nerve (II)

Conveys somatic sensory impulses from retina to thalamus via optic tract; impulses then relayed to occipital lobe.

  • Oculomotor nerve (III)

Controls four of six eye muscles via somatic motor axons; autonomic motor axons control focusing and pupil changes; autonomic sensory axons involved in eye muscle proprioception.

  • Trochlear nerve (IV)

Controls one eye muscle with somatic motor axons; autonomic sensory axons involved in eye muscle proprioception.

  • Trigeminal nerve (V)

Largest cranial nerve; supplies somatic sensory axons to face and somatic motor axons to chewing muscles.

  • Clinical use of Trigeminal nerve

Dentists desensitize jaws by injecting anesthetic into alveolar branches of maxillary and mandibular divisions.

  • Abducens nerve (VI)

Supplies somatic motor axons to one eye muscle; contains autonomic sensory axons for proprioception.

  • Facial nerve (VII)

Supplies somatic motor and autonomic sensory axons to facial muscles; autonomic motor axons control lacrimal and salivary glands; somatic sensory axons innervate taste buds on anterior two-thirds of tongue.

  • Vestibulocochlear nerve (VIII)

Sensory axons innervate cochlea and vestibule of inner ear, permitting hearing and equilibrium.

  • Glossopharyngeal nerve (IX)

Supplies somatic sensory axons to posterior one-third of tongue and pharynx; somatic motor and autonomic sensory axons innervate pharynx muscles for swallowing; autonomic motor axons control parotid gland.

  • Vagus nerve (X)

Supplies autonomic motor and sensory axons to nearly all thoracic and abdominal viscera including heart, lungs, and stomach.

  • Accessory nerve (XI)

Supplies somatic motor and autonomic sensory axons to pharynx, trapezius, and sternocleidomastoid muscles, enabling swallowing and head movements.

  • Hypoglossal nerve (XII)

Supplies somatic motor and autonomic sensory axons to tongue muscles involved in swallowing and speaking.

  • Number and type of spinal nerves

31 pairs of spinal nerves; all are mixed nerves containing both motor and sensory axons.

  • Formation of spinal nerves

Formed by ventral (motor) and dorsal (sensory) roots.

  • Division of spinal nerves

Divide into ventral rami and dorsal rami; ventral rami form plexuses supplying limbs and anterior body.

  • Cervical plexus

Located under sternocleidomastoid muscle; contains the phrenic nerve which serves the diaphragm.

  • Brachial plexus

Gives rise to nerves serving upper limbs; contains the radial nerve which innervates posterior arm muscles and skin.

  • Lumbar plexus

Serves abdominal wall and anteromedial thigh; contains the femoral nerve which innervates anterior thigh muscles and skin.

  • Sacral plexus

Serves buttocks, lower limbs, and pelvis; contains the sciatic nerve which innervates posterior thigh muscles and leg skin.

  • Reflex types

Two types: unlearned (innate) reflexes and learned (acquired) reflexes.

  • Components of a reflex arc

Includes receptor, sensory neuron, integration center, motor neuron, and effector.

  • Spinal reflex examples

Includes flexor reflex and crossed extensor reflex.
