  • Ventilation

Air moving in and out of the lungs

  • External respiration

Exchange of gases between the air in the lungs and the blood

  • Internal respiration

Exchange of gases between the blood and the body's tissues

  • What are the organs that are found in the Upper respiratory tact?

    1. Nose

    2. Nasal cavity

    3. Sinuses

    4. Pharynx (throat)

  • What are the organs that are found in the lower respiratory tact?

    1. larynx (voicebox)

    2. Trachea (wind pipe)

    3. Bronchi

    4. Lungs

    5. bronchial trees

    6. Alveoli

  • What is the nose made up of?

It's made up of bone and cartilage

  • What are the nostrils and what do they do?

They're the openings of the nose that lead into the nasal cavity and help filter out large pathogen particles from entering the body.

  • What's the nasal cavity? What does it do?

It's the cavity that is found inside the nose. It's divided sagitally by the nasal septum. It's lined with mucous membrane , and also contains the nasal conchae.

  • What's the mucous membrance?

The mucous membrane is the liquid that is lined inside the nasal cavity, it provides warmth, moisture , and traps particles

  • What's the nasal conchae?

There are 3 pairs : Superior, middle, and inferior.

Located on the lateral walls of each side of the nasal cavity.

They create turbulence of incoming air, encouraging more contact with mucous membrane

    "Scroll-like"

  • Sinuses

Hollow air-filled spaces inside 4 of the bones in the skull.

    Lined with the mucous membrane

    all near the nose

  • What are the 3 functions of the sinues?

    1. Drains fluid into the nasal cavity

    2. Decrease weight from the skull

    3. resonate the voice

  • What's the pharynx and what are the 3 different types?

It's the common passageway for food/air

    the 3 types:

    1. Nasopharynx: posterior to the nasal cavity

    2. Oropharynx: posterior to the oral cavity

    3. Laropharynx: posterior to the larynx

  • What is the respiratory tact mostly lined with?

It's lined with ciliated columnar epithelium, which encourages the flow of mucous down the esophagus
